Be an Exceptional OOA Member

By Dr. Lindsay Florkey, 2024 OOA President

The Ohio Optometric Association is compiled of ODs who are invested in optometry and its future. Among the over 1,400 member ODs, there is a number who go a step beyond and actively engage in their association; these are our exceptional members. Are you among their rank? I encourage you to increase your level of activity with the association this year so that you are counted among these exceptional members.

Membership in the AOA/OOA is crucial. Those of us in OOA Leadership discuss the need for all ODs to be members, and we do our very best to provide tangible benefits to all members. But being an exceptional member involves more than making annual dues payments. Exceptional members are engaged and receive maximum benefit from their membership because they are aware and ready to take advantage of opportunities to support the profession. While we already have many exceptional members, we need more.

  • We need members that open and read Perspectives articles.
  • We need members that attend zone functions.
  • We need members that attend EastWest Destinations and the EastWest Eye Conference, bringing their staff along for top-notch education.
  • We need members to present Realeyes and/or to allow their staff to present.
  • We need members that are willing to serve in zone leadership, on committees, or on the OOA Board.
  • We need members that are willing to donate $25 per month or more to OOPAC.

My involvement in the OOA has been extensive over the years, and it has been incredibly rewarding to serve our profession. I have always felt that it is beneficial for my practice as well, because I am aware of the issues facing optometry. Before I ran my own practice, as an employed OD I was able to inform my employer of issues because I would keep up with Perspectives and attend zone meetings. Not everyone is expected to be president of the OOA, but you can work to become an engaged member. This will only benefit you and this profession that we love. As always, please let me know if you have questions, comments, or concerns: email info@ooa.org.

I agree. We need more exceptional members. The problem is that the exceptional members are the ones that are reading this article!

Can you send this out to personal emails? You might want to consider that.
