The OOA has been notified of a phishing scam targeting the public including physicians and optometrists. A fraudulent caller contacts the optometrist’s office pretending to be from the DEA. They use a current DEA employee’s name and inform the optometrist that the DEA has opened an investigation under their medical license and DEA number. They accuse the optometrist of trafficking schedule 3 narcotics across the border and selling it illegally across the country. The caller tries to obtain personal information by using scare-tactics such as threatening to send local authorities to your office if you do not comply and divulge this personal information.
DEA personnel will never contact members of the public or medical practitioners to demand money or any other form of payment, will never request personal or sensitive information, and will only notify people of a legitimate investigation or legal action in person or by official letter.
